Nutrition and Dietary Standards

Amherst Meals on Wheels delivers one hot meal and one cold meal each weekday that a client requests our service. Both meals are delivered together between 11:00 am and
12:30 pm. Weekend meals are available upon request; they are delivered on Thursdays and Fridays and follow the menu for those days.

Nutritional Standards

The Amherst Meals on Wheels menu is certified by registered dietitians with the Erie County Department of Senior Services.

  • The hot and cold meal combined contain a minimal of 66% of the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) – a set of values used to plan nutrient intakes of healthy people.

  • Four diet options are available to accommodate people with special dietary needs, and additional modifications may be made if a doctor’s note is provided.

4 Diet Options

Regular Diet: Two-thirds of the recommended daily adult nutritional requirements are provided in our regular diet including a variety of healthy foods from all food groups.

Modified Carbohydrate: While Amherst Meals on Wheels does not offer a diabetic diet, the modified carbohydrate menu is designed to eliminate highly sweetened foods, such as some desserts and snacks, while providing lower carbohydrate substitutions.

Modified Renal: Our renal diet is designed to control protein, phosphorous, potassium, and sodium. For instance, milk, tomato products, citrus fruits and juices, bananas, prunes, and dried peas and beans are eliminated, along with other related food and beverages. Servings of cheeses and potatoes are limited.

Modified Bland: Foods that are difficult to digest are eliminated from our bland diet. These include tomato products, corn, baked and dried beans and peas, and raw vegetable salads except for lettuce plain lettuce may be served.

Additional Dietary Notes

Sodium: Amherst Meals on Wheels adheres to the Erie County Health Department’s standard of 2,000 mg of sodium contained in our daily cold and hot meals combined.

Cut Meat: For clients unable to do so, we can cut whole meats into small pieces when chicken, beef, and turkey are on the menu. Sandwiches are cut in half.

Holiday Menus: So that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy a holiday meal, some holiday menus may include food items that do not adhere to special diets. If a client has special diet concerns, we advise them to use their own judgement on these days.
